1. You will find yourself
What can be better than finding a new you? Sometimes we do not realize our capability and may be limiting ourselves. When we travel alone, it brings about responsibility for self. We learn to look out for the self and act accordingly. When you travel with others, there is a sense of security. But when alone, you need to conquer that fear and march on.
It is often at such times that we find we are good at things like planning, budgeting, reaching out and making friends and making the most of the available resources. In short, you learn to be fully responsible for yourself and your actions. What’s more, you will realize that you are fully capable of doing many things all by yourself that you thought you couldn’t. It’s like finding a new you and you can also spare time for your passions like reading, humming, singing, dancing, photography or even writing.
2. You will love your freedom
Once you have traveled alone, you will certainly enjoy your freedom like nothing else! That incredible feeling of liberation is a great one to hang onto. The excitement with which you look forward to the trip, the trepidation that you have in mind, the joy you feel when you finally get going, are all worth it. The exhilaration that you feel when you go through the trip alone, seeing places, meeting people, doing things at your own pace, etc. is unparalleled.
You come back as a new, confident, bubbling person who is enthusiastic about life with rich and invigorating experience. That sense of freedom you get by traveling alone is just unexplainable.
3. It’s your choice
When you travel alone, you are the boss, and there is none that you have to answer to. The itinerary is decided by you, based on what you like to do and when. There is no question of doing something, especially something that you don’t want to, for the sake of others. You are the sole dictator of your time, and you can spend it as you see fit. And if all you want to do on a particular day is just to chill out, then you can do that as well.
4. You will meet new people
It is but natural that when you travel, you meet people and make new friends. When you travel alone, this is more so. You may also find like-minded people around you who are traveling alone and exchange notes. You will learn to talk to the locals and gather information and plan your trip well.
You would be able to figure out the ‘must see’ and ‘must eat’ places, and what those must do things are. The more people you talk to, the better you will feel. A word of caution though; you should also learn to pick the right people to talk and make friends as otherwise, it can get dangerous, especially if you are in a totally strange place. A very nice quote says “You never really travel alone; the world is full of friends waiting to get to know you”.
5. Your sense of observation improves by leaps and bounds
Typically, when we travel with others, we are more concerned only about us and forget actually to observe things, people or places. We fail to see what is around us and are more absorbed in ourselves. Traveling alone helps improve our sense of observation a lot. We start noticing things in a different way and also see things that we otherwise would not pay attention to.
Being alone can thus help us improve our travel experiences by making us more aware of our surroundings, the place, and the people. We get an entirely different perspective about the same place.
6. Overcome your fear
Most often it is our inner fear and our lack of knowledge about our own capabilities that impede us from traveling alone. We are afraid of all the things that can go wrong. We worry about all the worst case scenarios. This stops us from thinking about the best case scenarios of all the things we can gain from traveling alone.
Traveling alone is the best way to overcome some of your fears. Sleeping alone in a hotel room far away from your home and waking up to an entirely new day can change your perception of life.
7. You can lose yourself
Indeed, we said you could find yourself, and it is also true that you can lose yourself. When you are with people who know you, you are expected to behave like yourself. But when you are alone, no one around knows you; you become whoever you want to be. It can be fun; you are someone among strangers who do not expect anything specific from you. You can let go of yourself, lose yourself and then find the real you, in the whole process.
8. It clears your thought process
Sometimes it is when you travel alone and spend some time with yourself that certain things begin falling into place. You may find yourself thinking in a different manner about people and things back home. You will find answers to certain questions in your mind. Your thoughts clear up, and your thinking improves vastly.
9. The world is beautiful
It is when you travel alone that you realize there is a lot to see in the world out there. It’s not just the people, the places, the nature, the wildlife, the cultures etc. you realize that that the universe as a whole is a beautiful place. You will also realize how small we are as humans and learn to look at the world in an entirely different perspective. It improves us overall as human beings as well. We learn to imbibe from those experiences and realizations.
10. You will learn to accept things and changes
The best of plans can always go wrong. If you are traveling alone and circumstances change, you learn to accept rather than throw a tantrum about it. You realize that some things are out of your control, and that change is also good. You may end up not seeing a place, stay a few more days somewhere you had not planned, someone messed up your bookings, etc.
11. There is always a first time
While traveling alone, it is entirely possible that you end up trying a few things that you might otherwise have foregone. There is that little person inside you who urges you to do the undoable, something that you have not done till now, but would love to. You realize that you may not get a chance to do certain things again, and so you let go.

12. You will appreciate the ‘Me’ time
Typically, one rarely finds “me” time at home or in the office. Life is more like a set sequence of things that you need to go through. You would rarely find time for yourself. There is always something to be done, someone to attend to, somewhere to go etc. All these mundane everyday activities can ensure that we hardly ever get time for ourselves.
In our minds we keep having that bucket list of things to do, saying “One day……” Take that small step of traveling alone to a place for a few days. You may well find yourself able to tick off many of the things from your bucket list as well. It is not that difficult to read a book, catch a movie, cook for yourself or get that painting done. It’s just that we think it is difficult. Once you have traveled alone, you will appreciate the “Me” time and learn to find it often.
13. You learn to love life
Once you have traveled alone, you learn to love life and yourself better, and you can feel, more than seeing the change in the quality of your life. You would have stepped out of your comfort zone and would now be more open to things. That, by itself, would help improve your life.
There are many more reasons you should travel alone, at least once in your lifetime. However, we are sure you’ve read enough, to take the plunge! People don’t make trips, trips make people. Indeed, travel is what changes people with wonderful experiences along the way- even more true, when you travel alone!
